A center fielder at Booker T. Washington High School, Roy Welmaker was an outstanding student-athlete who “did some spectacular fielding and hard hitting.” After graduating from Washington, Welmaker attended Clark College where he also played for the Atlanta Black Crackers.
Mr. Welmaker later played for the following teams:
* Homestead Grays (1936–1938, 1942, 1944–1945)
* Philadelphia Stars (1939–1940)
* Wilkes-Barre Indians (1949)
* San Diego Padres (1950–1951)
* Hollywood Stars (1951–1953)
* Portland Beavers (1952–1953)
Welmaker also pitched in the Mexican League, the Venezuelan League, and as a soldier in World War II.
