Self-proclaimed “Ambassador for the Negro Leagues,” James “Red” Moore began his career as a pre-teen when he played semi-pro baseball with the Oakland City Cubs and the Macon Black Peaches.
During his career, Moore played for:
-The Atlanta Black Crackers (1935, 1938, and 1946-48)
-Newark Eagles (1936-1937)
-Baltimore Elite Giants (1938, 1939-1940)
Between 1942-1945, Moore was called to serve in World War II where he served in a combat-engineer battalion in England, Belgium, and France,
“According to Buck O’Neal, former Negro League player, Mr. Moore could ‘pick it.’ He was a defensive whiz who often entertained crowds before games by catching the ball behind his back while warming up on the field.”
In 2006, Moore was inducted into the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame with Evander Holyfield, Furman Bisher, Phil Neikro, Bobby Cremins and Wyomia Tyus. He has been honored by the Braves 400 Club with the Luke Appling award and featured in a special USA Today sports edition (spring 2008) about his inside-the-park homerun at Yankee Stadium.
