Dr. Shirley Kilgore (Submitted by Charlotte Hutchins ’88 and Cherise Edwards ’03)
Question: What impact did Dr. Kilgore have on you?

“Watching Dr. Kilgore and her no-nonsense leadership style helped me with customizing both my management and leadership style to also be no-nonsense. She also created an administrative team that historically put BTW on the map by obtaining major partnerships that ultimately led to the students receiving the most amount of scholarship funding in the 2000s.” -Charlotte Hutchins ’88

“I recall Dr. Kilgore correcting Rev. Jesse Jackson in front of the student body after he called us “underprivileged.” In that moment, I was proud to be a student in her school because she not only stood up for us in front of this legend, she also made sure we did not feel as if we were less than because of where we came from.

It was under Dr. Kilgore that the students received so many accolades and scholarships for doing well in academics, not just in sports. Oftentimes, you would see students studying on their own free will because they wanted to take part in the free trips and activities that came with doing great (not well) in school and scoring high on the SAT. ” -Cherise Edwards ’03
