Desegregating Atlanta Public Schools: Part 1

Madelyn Nix and
Thomas Welch

“FOUR SCHOOLS WERE DESEGREGATED THIS MORNING”.

On August 30, 1961, nine Black students desegregated four Atlanta High Schools. Three of those students--Willie Jean Black, Madelyn Nix, and Thomas Welch--had attended Booker T. Washington High School before desegregating Atlanta Public Schools.
In this five-part series, Ms. Madelyn Nix and Mr. Thomas Welch share the stories of their experience desegregating J.E. Brown High School (now Herman J. Russell West End Academy).
