Coach Baker was Head Coach at Washington for 37 seasons (1931-1968) where he coached track, football, and basketball.

As Head Coach, his teams won over 222 football games and 289 basketball games. Coach Baker even “Led the Bulldogs to 17 unbeaten seven-game football seasons, including a stretch of 10 in a row” -AJC

Coach Baker was not only a firm coach, but also a dedicated mentor who was respected by his athletes.

One of his students, Raymond “Tweet” Williams ’44, spoke about his kindness in an interview. “He was a fine, outstanding man that loved kids and had a great knowledge about coaching all the sports. He had a very good sense of humor and was the type of guy that I never heard use profanity of any nature toward anybody. He was a fatherly figure to all the athletes who went through Washington. He was a true maker of men and women.”

A 2008 Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Inductee, Coach L. C. Baker coached many athletes that went on to major sports careers. Among them are Donn Clendenon and Roy Welmaker (MLB), James “Red” Moore and Chico Renfroe (Negro Leagues), and Leila Glover (Olympic High Hurdler).
