*In the key of Beyonce’s “Formation”* “This group of ladies got all this information to save the black communities from all this degradation.”

In 1908, the Atlanta Neighborhood Union was created by a group of black women who conducted surveys to learn the needs and inequalities of working-class black communities in Atlanta. “Using these evidence-based processes, the Union articulated an array of critical issues in the community, including: unsanitary living conditions, poor housing, improper sewage, unclean water, inadequate lighting, the lack of recreational facilities, the lack of health resources, issues related to crime and delinquency, and more.” In 1913, the Neighborhood Union submitted a survey to Atlanta’s Board of Education showing the conditions of black schools which were overcrowded, understaffed, and underfunded.
These WOMEN ultimately waged a campaign that would lead to the establishing of the very first public high school for African American students in the State of Georgia, BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL!
