🇺🇸In 1957, he earned a law degree from North Carolina Central University because the University of Georgia didn’t yet accept Black students.
🇺🇸From 1952 to 1962, Sen. Johnson served as the first black in the Fulton County Solicitor General’s office
🇺🇸In 1962, he was elected to the Georgia Senate where he served from 1963 to 1975.
🇺🇸He’s credited with a number of civil rights advances, including helping desegregate Georgia capitol facilities.
🇺🇸In 1970, Johnson helped restart boxer Muhammad Ali’s career after he was penalized for evading the draft.
🇺🇸In 2017, Sen. Johnson was recognized with the Randolph Thrower Lifetime Achievement Award by the State Bar of Georgia.
