🇺🇸Announced her candidacy for the Georgia House of Representatives in 1984 when she was chosen as a presidential delegate for candidate Jesse Jackson at the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco, California. 🇺🇸In the same year she won a seat in the Georgia House, defeating incumbent Grace Towns Hamilton (also a former student at Booker T. Washington High School). In this seat, was the youngest member of the House. 🇺🇸In 1997, she again sought public office winning the Atlanta City Council, Post 1 At-Large seat which allowed her to focus on quality of life issues most impacting people throughout Atlanta. 🇺🇸Authored the 1st acupuncture (complementary medical bill) in the State of Georgia
🇺🇸Mandated that insurance companies pay for mammograms, pap smears, and prostate cancer tests as a regular part of the medical benefit plan
🇺🇸Authored Rape shield legislation that makes it harder for a woman’s past sexual history to be included in rape trials – unless there was a past relationship between the two. Giving the case a chance to be tried on its merit
🇺🇸Passed legislation providing fire trucks first responders license that allows fire persons to administer IV’s without being sued
🇺🇸A key leader in the fight for Medicaid expansion in the State of Georgia
🇺🇸Chaired the Housing Needs, Midwifery, and the Feminization of Poverty study committees
🇺🇸Successful sponsor of House Resolution 1577, which creates a Statewide Study Committee that deals with diversity and inclusion in the $9 Billion Film and Television Industry.
🇺🇸Founder and Executive Director of the Greater Vine City Opportunities Program, Inc., which provides youth and family enrichment and educational opportunities for high-risk urban youth.
🇺🇸Announced her candidacy for US Senate in October 2019
